Hi everyone, I’m Dr. Choi Sangmun, director of Ryan Plastic Surgery in Seoul, Korea. We specialize in advanced breast augmentation procedures tailored to individual body types.
In my last post, I shared my journey heading to Singapore for the Motiva Summit. Today, I am excited to share a detailed recap of the first session at the Motiva Asia Pacific Summit 2025, focusing on implant safety and emerging surgical technologies.
Networking with Top Plastic Surgeons in Asia Pacific
What struck me most about this summit was the opportunity to connect with leading plastic surgeons from across the Asia Pacific region. Although we operate in different countries, our goal is identical: achieving the best outcomes for our patients. It was remarkable to see how our concerns regarding surgical techniques and patient satisfaction aligned perfectly.
Motiva’s Philosophy: Ergonomy & Natural Aesthetics
The session opened with a keynote by Juan José Chacón-Quirós (JJ), the founder of Motiva. He emphasized that since 2004, his goal hasn’t just been to change breast shape, but to evolve technology to protect both a woman’s health and beauty.
JJ highlighted the four core elements of Motiva implants that ensure a natural look and feel:
- Ergonomy: Anatomical design that moves with the body.
- Adaptability: Conforming seamlessly to different body types.
- Softness: Providing a natural, soft touch.
- Elongation: Superior stretch and flexibility for smaller incisions.
This holistic concept connects movement, texture, and tissue stress reduction—key factors for successful breast augmentation in Korea and globally.
Key Insight: 5-Year Safety Data & Capsular Contracture Rates
For patients considering surgery, safety is the #1 priority. The summit presented promising long-term safety data tracking 451 patients over 2 to 5 years.
The results showed consistently low complication rates:
- Capsular contracture: Only 0.5% over 5 years.
- Rupture Rate: 0.6%.
- Infection: 0.9% (remained stable).
- Reoperation rate: 5.7% (2 years) â 8.8% (5 years).
The most common question I get during consultations at Ryan Plastic Surgery is, “Will the implants be safe in the long run?” This data provides a scientifically backed answer, reassuring patients about the durability and safety of Motiva implants.
New Technologies: Preservé and the mia System
The summit also introduced two innovative approaches that are particularly well-suited for Asian women’s body characteristics:
- Preservé: A tissue-preserving surgical design applied to augmentation, lifting, and hybrid procedures.
- mia System: A minimally invasive approach allowing for faster recovery and virtually invisible scarring.
Global Trends: From “Big” to “Natural”
A significant takeaway was the shift in global breast augmentation trends. The era of simply maximizing size is fading. Modern patients prefer results that harmonize with their natural body frame.
The data confirms that demand for traditional augmentation is stabilizing, while demand for premium, natural, and minimal-incision approaches is growing rapidly.
FDA Approval and the Motiva IDE Study
This discussion ties into the Motiva IDE Study regarding US market entry. The U.S. patient cohort demonstrated similar high safety outcomes and satisfaction levels as Asian patients. You can find more details about the IDE Study in my earlier post. Notably, Motiva has recently received FDA approval, making it officially available in the U.S. market.
Conclusion: Enhancing Quality of Life
The first session reinforced my belief that breast augmentation isn’t just about size—it’s a medical process that enhances a woman’s quality of life.
In my next post, I will dive deeper into clinical insights tailored for Asian body types and specific design approaches discussed by international experts. Thanks for watching!
