Breast Reconstruction in Korea

Breast reconstruction restores the shape of the breast after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. At Ryan Plastic Surgery Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Choi Sangmun works with each patient to plan reconstruction around their treatment, body, and goals — with a focus on restoring form and confidence.

Who it is for

Reconstruction may be an option after breast cancer surgery or for congenital or developmental differences. It can sometimes be performed at the same time as cancer surgery, or as a later, separate stage. The right timing depends on your treatment plan and is best decided together with your oncology team.

Approaches

  • Implant-based reconstruction — rebuilding volume with an implant, sometimes in stages with a tissue expander.
  • Fat grafting — using your own fat to refine shape and contour.
  • Combined approaches — tailored to your anatomy and prior treatment.

Your surgeon will explain which options are appropriate for your situation and why.

Recovery

Reconstruction is often staged, so recovery and timelines depend on the approach. Your surgeon sets your individual plan, including how long international patients should stay in Korea between stages and for follow-up. Timelines are general guidance and vary between individuals.

Risks and considerations

Reconstruction carries surgical risks including bleeding, infection, healing problems, changes in sensation, scarring, and asymmetry, as well as risks specific to implants (rupture, capsular contracture, and the need for future revision) or to fat grafting (partial reabsorption, fat necrosis, and imaging changes). Coordination with your cancer care is important. All relevant risks will be reviewed with you before you decide.
