Revision surgery corrects or reverses a previous breast operation. At Ryan Plastic Surgery Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Choi Sangmun approaches each revision individually — reviewing your history, examining your tissue, and building a plan specific to your situation. Sometimes the right answer is to do more; sometimes it is to do less.
When revision is considered
- Capsular contracture — firmness or distortion from scar tissue around the implant
- Implant rupture or deflation
- Malposition, “bottoming out,” or asymmetry
- Rippling or visible implant edges
- A wish to change size, or to remove implants entirely — with or without a lift or fat transfer
Our approach
Revision is more individual than first-time surgery. Where available, we review your prior operative records and imaging, examine your tissue, and discuss realistic options — including implant exchange, capsule treatment, repositioning, removal, or replacing volume with your own fat. Modern implants such as Motiva Ergonomix and SmoothSilk may be options where a new device is appropriate.
Recovery
Recovery depends on what the revision involves and can differ from your first surgery. Your surgeon sets your individual plan, including how long international patients should stay in Korea for follow-up before flying. Timelines are general guidance and vary between individuals.
Risks and considerations
Revision surgery can be more complex than primary surgery. Risks include those of the original procedure plus the added challenge of altered or scarred tissue — bleeding, infection, changes in sensation, scarring, asymmetry, recurrence of contracture, and the possibility that more than one procedure is needed. Outcomes depend heavily on individual factors, and a thorough consultation is essential. All relevant risks will be reviewed with you before you decide.
